LAKES & RIVERS
Big Muddy River
A 154-mile river with 36 miles of public access, it begins north of Mount Vernon, has six major tributaries and empties into the Mississippi a few miles south of Grand Tower. Species include bluegill, channel catfish, suckers and drum.

Cedar Lake
This 1,750-acre lake in the western half of Shawnee National Forest is about six miles south of Carbondale between U.S. 51 and Illinois 127. It has 40 miles of shoreline, a maximum depth of 60 feet and provides largemouth bass, spotted bass, bluegill, sunfish, crappie, channel catfish, bullheads, carp, walleye, yellow bass, suckers and drum. There is a 10-horsepower limit. Large or Smallmouth Bass-14-18 inch slot limit, 6 fish daily creel limit, 5 fish below 14 inches, 1 fish above 18 inches. Striped, White, or Hybrid Striped Bass-17 inch minimum length limit.

Crab
Orchard Lake
The largest of the three refuge lakes, this 6,965-acre body of water has two marinas, 125 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth of 25 feet. Species include largemouth bass, bluegill, sunfish, crappie, channel catfish, bullheads, carp and white bass. Large or Smallmouth Bass-16 inch minimum length limit, 3 fish daily creel limit. Striped, White, or Hybrid Striped Bass-10 fish daily creel limit, 3 Fish 17 inches or longer.

Devil's Kitchen Lake

This 810-acre lake is part of the  Crab Orchard refuge is stocked with rainbow and brown trout. It has a maximum depth of 90 feet and a 24-mile shoreline. It also provides largemouth bass, bluegill, sunfish, crappie, channel catfish, bullheads and carp. There is a 10-horsepower limit.

Kinkaid Lake
This is one of the few lakes in Southern Illinois to successfully stock muskie. Its 2,750 acres wind around the northwestern hills of Shawnee National Forest. It has 92 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth of 80 feet. Other species include largemouth bass, spotted bass, bluegill, sunfish, crappie, channel catfish,
bullheads, carp, walleye, white bass and suckers. Large or Smallmouth Bass-16 inch minimum length limit, 3 fish daily creel limit. White, Black, or Hybrid Crappie-9 inch minimum length limit, 25 fish daily creel limit. Pure Muskellunge-48 inch minimum length limit. Walleye or Sauger-14 inch minimum length limit, 6 fish daily creel.

Lake Murphysboro
This 144-acre lake in Jackson County has 7.5 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth of 40 feet. It provides largemouth bass, spotted bass, bluegill, sunfish, crappie, channel catfish, bullheads, carp, white bass and suckers. There is a 10-horsepower limit.. Bluegill or redear - 25 fish daily creel limit. Channel catfish - 6 fish daily creel limit. Large, smallmouth or spotted bass - 3 fish daily creel limit, no minimum length.

Little Grassy Lake
One of three lakes in the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, Little Grassy in J ackson County
is a 1,000-acre lake with a shoreline
of 29 miles. It has a maximum depth of 100 feet and provides
black and white crappie, largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, carp, white bass and walleye. The
refuge is adjacent to Illinois 13, Interstate 57 and U.S. 51. In order to use any of the facilities on the
refuge, patrons must purchase a federal duck stamp at the ranger station on Illinois 148 or at one of the
boat docks. Channel catfish - 6 fish daily creel limit. Large or smallmouth bass - 12-15 inch slot limit.

Striped, White, or Hybrid Striped Bass-30 fish daily creel limit. Northern Pike-1 fish daily creel limit. Paddlefish-2 fish daily creel limit. Walleye and Sauger-8 fish daily creel limit. White, Black, or Hybrid Crappie-30 fish daily creel limit. Total species combined 100 fish, daily creel limit.
 

Beaches


Poplar Camp Beach
Poplar Camp Beach's sandy waterfront leads to a swim and play area, an area for rafts and floats, and a "lap" lane. Red Cross certified lifeguards are on duty at all times, and Cedar Lake personnel and the Carbondale Police patrol the beach. Restrooms, picnic tables, and a concession stand are also available. Beach hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily and 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends and holidays. Located on Cedar Lake in Carbondale. 618-549-8441 or 618-549-5302

Swimming Beach at Kinkaid Lake
Kinkaid's swimming beach is located off the picnic area and offers the only regulated swim area on Kinkaid Lake with three miles of No Wake. However, no lifeguard services are provided. Swimming hours are 6 a.m. to dusk daily, approximately May through September. 618-687-4914.
